Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
