Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
