Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
