Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
