Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
