Pickup Craps – Tips and Tactics: The History of Craps

Be cunning, play brilliant, and pickup craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
