Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
