Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
