Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
