Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
