Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Schemes: The Background of Craps

Be cunning, play brilliant, and pickup craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
