Become Versed in Craps – Hints and Tactics: The History of Craps
Be clever, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
