The History of Casino Craps

[ English ]

The background of Craps dates back to a dice game called Hazard, which goes back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in Early 1800’s. Hazard is believed to be a byproduct of Azzahr, meaning ‘the die’ a game played by Arabs.

The game developed as it spread out from the Arab regions to France and then England. By the early 18th century, cultivated game rules for Hazard had been developed. France adopted the British variation of Hazard and is thought to have been brought to the us by early French colonists. In the mid-18th century, when the British beat the French in Canada, the French colonizers relocated to Louisiana. Dice were played on river boats, clubs and wharfs and a simplified ‘US’ style of Craps was developed. The game headed west and is a favoured game that is participated in all over the U.S. and around the planet.

The name ‘Craps’ is considered to be a French articulation of the term crabs, which means a pair of ‘1s’. There are 2 general varieties of Craps that are gambled on-street Craps and casino Craps. Street caps, accurately called seeing as it is played on the streets is where a shooter sets a point and then attempts to make that point. The betting is made either for or against the shooter and someone must cover the wager in order for the dice game to go ahead.

In casino Craps, which is the accepted game, competed in in casinos, the betting house funds the game. The gamblers wager with the casino-the house covers all of the wagers of all of the gamblers. Craps once was a very popular casino game but in the last 20 years had split itself and other games, like poker and chemin de fer became even more well-loved. However, Craps is experiencing a come back in popularity once again in internet betting houses and in land based betting houses.
