Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
