Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
