Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
