Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
