Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
