Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
