Pickup Craps – Pointers and Techniques: The Past of Craps
Be smart, play cunning, and become versed in craps the ideal way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
