Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
