Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
