Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
