Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwards, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
